We are growing

A brief update on our future plans

Aug
05

This post is about the `Status Quo` of YOOtheme, our future plans and the new product pricing. In the last 6 months we spent a lot of time developing and re-inventing the foundation of our themes. Namely, our new Warp 7 framework which is behind all our current theme releases and UIkit, our new front-end framework.

Theme releases

During the development of our latest themes we realized a rising complexity. Five years ago all we had to do was to make the theme look great in every browser. Nowadays, themes are much more feature-rich. They are responsive and we have to deal with all kinds of viewports and devices. Our latest Warp 7 release brings two new elements into the development: LESS and our new customizer. Making the customizer work great takes a lot of tweaking of all the different variables. Also, the demo content and style variations have become a lot more sophisticated and require a lot of work. In conclusion, we can say that each theme takes 2 months of design and development.

Support

Over the years our user base has grown a lot. We receive more than 100 questions and 200 answers are given in our support center every day. Our statistics show that more than 60% of these issues get solved. The actual number is even higher, because many users just forget to mark their issues as solved. We will continue to improve the support, so everyone gets the answer he needs more quickly.

Healthy business

Over the last 2 years our team has grown to 20 people, including our full time staff and support team, to tackle all the workload. This includes regular theme releases, maintenance and updates of all our current products while developing future projects. We are a healthy growing business and have a lot of new ideas we want to bring to life.

New pricing

All that said, we are preparing new pricing for all our products. This is the first pricing change in the last 5 years. We are adjusting them to compensate our growing team and the larger product range, so we can grow, improve and get better at what we do.

Themes
  • Basic: 49€
  • Standard: 99€
  • Developer: 299€
Widgetkit

  • Developer: 59€

Am I reading this correct? No matter when someone has signed up they lose their subscription Sept 1st and then have to pay the fees again and can't choose to do so when the subscription ends? Or is it just Sept 1st is when its available at those prices? I have 230 days left on my current subscription. Hoping I don't lose that and have to pay again so soon in full.

Happy with the price tags in general and I do appreciate the heads-up. Only the icons are a tad expensive in my opinion. I'd prefer paying a fixed price (9.99?) for each pack I actually need and use.

Another issue I have with the icons is the irregular release schedule — If I commit to a six month membership including all new releases, I expect a certain output (maybe at least one pack of six icons per month).
What about charging per icon? 1,49 Euro each, 2,49 including the vector files?

I am really sorry to say that, but in my opinion templates are looking more and more identical the past months. I loved your older templates that were more graphically impressing. I hope you guys will get back to more interesting looking templates.

I would also pay again if you get your hands on the old ones again to update them to Warp 7!

I cant agree more about the latest templates , the same look over and over , ithink you should get more creative and release great templates like Solar theme that was the only theme you released out of the usual yootheme style.

It is difficult to decide whether to resubscribe to ZOO before the increase. ZOO updates are few and far between and there have been no new applications added in... (actually, I can't even think of a time a new application was added).

I may find the update that adds the customizer worthwhile (it certainly has been for Warp 7 templates) and yet, I have doubts that ZOO won't just be forgotten once again soon thereafter.

You're correct on your first point. I can't remember the last time an app was added.

Which is a pity, because I've been tinkering with zoo development these past few months and I now firmly believe that it's the jewel in Joomla's crown.

The flexibility it offers is outstanding. The programming is wonderful. The framework and OOP structures are incredible.

In my opinion, and I may be wrong here, there may be some folks at yootheme who are surprised that ZOO didn't do better amount 3rd party devs.

It deserves to have a 'ZED'... Crammed with addons, plugins, apps and more.

Good to see you guys prospering. And your plans to scale up while at the same time maintaining the creative/innovative atmosphere is an ideal that most in your position should strive for.

However, are there any plans for zoo that you can mention, a roadmap? The blog and product catalog look good but ... would still like to have a shopping cart, ability to have custom search of directories, etc.

No problem here with a price raise if only the older themes were updated to the latest warp version. Check out your competitors! They update their themes to work with the latest version of their framework.

A widgetkit subscription? Okay no problem as well, but please add some more widgets to make it worth the amount.

Most subscription based services freeze prices for existing customers so as to not make them feel screwed-over later, guess that principle doesn't apply here.

Changing prices should not negatively impact the existing loyal customer base, this seems more like extortion. If YOO can say that each theme takes 2 months of design and development, then increasing the prices for themes are justified but why increase all the prices for every product? This is just a typical money grab which seems to be the habit of many companies these days. Does it also take 2 months to build a new icon set?

Yoo already sacrificed artistic and creative designs for a functional boxy design where every new template kinda looks the same except the rectangles are of different colours and sizes; and now yoo increase the price of every product by a hefty amount and impost the new pricing on existing loyal customers. wow... just wow.

Please be precice in pricing options, for example I have the Joomla Standard and ZOO Developer subscriptions. Are you saying that I also need to buy the widgetkit subscription ??

Also, a timeframe for the next big version of Zoo would be nice (including all major planed improvments). Currently some Zoo features that many of us think should be included in the standard Zoo aplications are only available via other companies (zoolanders and similar), please make them available in Zoo so that you can easier justify the price increase

          Odd, that wasn't my experience.

When we purchased a themes subscription we only had download access to the 'Lite' version, and since we needed some of the widgets that don't come in that version we purchased a Widgetkit subscription as well. It was only then that the full version became available for download.

          So, your experience was different?

I would pay $299 for the Master Theme for a year, a theme that you give away for free, if you also provided excellent priority support support along with it.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I thought I'd just throw that out there.

I agree with that one. It was one of my suggestion on the "warp 7 wish list" post.

I never understood why we could not get support for using the free master theme. Which, as a developer, i would not mind to pay for it.
It's obviously fair to pay to get support. No argument there.

That would avoid being told you don't give support on the free master theme when just reporting a potential bug. (sorry, still haven't swallowed that one).

something like a "developer support" fee to support only the Master Theme. With only access to a specific section of the forum.

I'm pretty sure that most people using the Master Theme are developers who build upon it. Not because it's free but because it's a good base to then apply our own design and feature.

And if there people who understand that support has a cost, it's developers. Unless you're on crack!

        i forgot one thing.

I agree on the general fee increase. Especially if it hasn't been done for 5 years. Every where in the world, cost of life increased, so it's only normal.
As long as it's done properly and does not penalize existing and loyal customers.

I think it's only fair, and I totally agree with those who say that they understand that you to raise your prices.

On the other hand I agree with the point that you should be more precise on what to expect in the future, especially from zoo an widgetkit, with an approximative roadmap, let's say that for example every 4 month there is something to expect.

Imho there have not been very significant updates (by significant I mean, bringing new core features) since a lot of time.

Some Widgetkit examples: an ordering function in widgetkit galerie, an other way to show to show the captions in widgetkit slideshow (why not show them as in the lava theme slideshow?)

Some Zoo examples: an (often asked for) implemented item filtering function, a masonry/isotope rendered items view.

I mean, I've been paying my ZOO subscription from the start on, and I'll continue to do it, but I'm getting the feeling that I'm paying for small updates and error corrections and that the real improvement are not coming from you but from zoolanders to name one.

Also, since you plan to not include widgetkit in the template package (which is a hidden increased price, let's be honest :-) ), I'd like to know if you are planning new functions, new layouts etc... (not just changing the buttons from the slideshow element)

To sum up; keep going on the good work, but give us a bit more informations on what to expect.

I don't think it's fair to say that Widgetkit being a separate subscription is a hidden increased price. Some people just don't need Widgetkit's functionality or only need the free 'Lite' version. Widgetkit being separate makes as much sense as Zoo being separate, honestly, since all three aren't needed for all people or for all of their sites.

That being said, I do wish there were combined packages available, like Template+Widgetkit, Template+Zoo, Widgetkit+Zoo, and especially Template+Widgetkit+Zoo. ...I should probably suggest this. And in a standalone comment. :-p

Yootheme, you could be making your biggest mistake here. Here's why:

    1) It seems you are doubling the price for a developer license, but still you don't even provide a dedicated support system for developers. I have to go through the same channel as "basic" one-off user that pays 49€ What en earth justifies a 50% price increase???

    2) You now start to charge for Widgetkit. Over the last year there have been many feature requests (some have been made over and over from many different users) but you hardly ever listen to your clients requests and needs. And now you want money for this?

    3) In the past you always released a free Master theme, which contains your framework and can be used by anyone for free. Anyone with a bit of CSS and scripting knowledge can easily use that theme to create new styles that easily match the look of your recent template releases. Don't get me wrong, I like your framework to bits, but your designs change so little each month that it simply doesn't justify a 50% price increase.

    4) If you start having 2 versions of Widgetkit, what will be the difference between a standard and a developer license. If you do not control the usage of you licenses through some dedicated coding, most people will just go with the cheapest option and use it on every site they ever build. Clients with developer licenses will feel left out.

That's just my 5 cents... I will be looking for alternatives from now on.

There've always been two versions of Widgetkit. That is, there's always been a free 'Lite' version with fewer widgets, and a pay version with more. Go click on Widgetkit in the main menu, and then click on the "Buy Now" button. That's been there since Widgetkit was released and the prices are still the same as then (since the new ones haven't gone into effect yet).

You can even verify this using the Wayback Machine provided by the Internet Archive. Widgetkit was announced as fully released on January 10, 2012 and in the announcement it mentioned the availability of a free and a subscription version. (I've provided a link to that post below)

Prices seem reasonable to me - however, would like to see more updates to Zoo and/or as others have mentioned a roadmap/timeframe. I would also like to see perhaps some new app/element released now and then for zoo club members (not that I am one).

And finally - I know it has been said that you won't be but... Upgrading your older templates to the new warp/uikit frameworks would be cool too

I see a theme developing in these responses: Your developers don't mind paying a premium if it means that we'll receive better service, and more substantial upgrades: New Zoo apps and functionality (Zoolanders keeps coming up), varied template designs and more frequent Icon and WidgetKit releases.

I'm willing to take a leap of faith and imagine that if you had extra income you can apply it towards those goals. I imagine it's a chick and egg thing and I'm willing to take a leap of faith in you YooTheme.

But I suggest that YooTheme might have more people (especially developers) taking the plunge and buying into this new pricing if you explicitly stated your intentions in the form of a basic roadmap. Give us a sense of what we might expect if we invest in yoo.

No problem here with price increase. Makes good sense.

The thing I have on my wish list is to figure out how to stay current with the framework. I'm currently using the Nano 2 theme and already behind with the framework. I understand it would be really difficult to make all the older templates work with Warp but surely there is a way to upgrade if we don't make any core hacks. Just asking...
