Warp6 Nano Theme

Today we are very proud to release our new Nano theme! It's entirely based on what we have been working on over the past 6 months: Our brand new Warp6 theme framework!

Nano is the first theme that's build with Warp6, our fast and slick theme framework! It takes full advantage of all the latest Warp6 features like semantic HTML5 markup, a mobile theme, a nice and clean administration UI and much more. You won't find any bloated code or features that will slow your site. It's created from a developers perspective - simplified, no magic, just a great toolset to develop cross-platform themes.

Nano is an optimized and streamlined framework theme and serves as a blueprint to build your own custom themes. It offers 5 different theme styles to get you started right away. Each style has a slightly different motif and inherits its structure and layout from a default base theme. Those styles themselves will function as a starting point for you to design your own customizations, modifications and enhancements. That's simply done through inheritance. It has never been easier to have smaller variations of your theme for presentation purposes.

  • Available for Joomla 1.5, 1.6 and Wordpress
  • 5 style variations available
  • Choose from 5 colors and 8 fonts
  • 1 module style combinable with 4 badges and 6 icons
  • Flexible template and column widths
  • All Warp framework features are available

Warp6 Features

If you missed our blog post series about the Warp6 theme framework and all its features here you go:

Warp6 is cutting-edge! It's a major step and a great foundation for our future themes. Those themes will make heavy use of Warps astonishing features and possibilites. So hang tight and enjoy the Warp6 ride!

Update
  • The mobile theme may look too tiny on our demo server. Please try this link to see how the mobile theme really looks.
  • Here is an example of the error page.
  • Yes, this theme supports RTL.
  • The reported IE7 and IE8 issues are based on a packaging problem. Everything is fixed and working fine now.
  • The new tools are next on our to do list and will be released in May.

Well I just downloaded and installed the Joomla 1.5 Version.
My initial impressions are that I am not very impressed at all. There are no design variations which were present in the older templates. There are template variations where you can change the style of the template frame which is nice. This should be present as well as the 8-12 design variations which had been present in the older templates. This template is very "plain looking" I am actually kind of surprised that this is what I had waited all this time for. I have had very high anticipations for this release and it just looks like a slimmed down, modernized version of "Scoop" (March 2009 Template Release) minus the graphical elements.

I did notice improvements to the administrative interface and the site does come up nicely in a droid and iPad but from a design standpoint, the front-end of the template (which is the most important part) is blank!

Also, with the older templates not being converted to the newer WARP6, I am basically left with my developer license in hand and an empty toolbox of modern templates to use. :'(

That's the whole point about Nano. It's an optimized and streamlined framework theme and serves as a blueprint to build your own custom themes. It is as blank as possible to be an optimal starter theme.

We know it doesn't look so impressive because it doesn't have all bells and whistles graphically speaking. But it is fully packed with new features and possibilities! I'm pretty sure you will love it as soon as you need some basic theme to start development.

As we said in the blog post above, it is a major step for us with all the new provided features. Future themes will be build upon and have more shiny stuff again...

Let's not do "typical"...Please! If anything, I think there should always be a framework theme along with the others with graphics bells & whistles. This will be a very unique and long overdue approach. Think about, Yoo!

        |
Really glad your company has taken this approach, Sascha. If this initial entry template was some sort of fancy graphic design, sure, it would please a few people who could use it out of the box, but that would have left most of us out of luck, having to wait for future templates which more suited out taste (or having to completely butcher the new template until it looked the way we want!). This way, everyone can get exactly what they need with a minimum of effort. Again, well played! EXACTLY what the community needed...

I'm going to agree with Scott here. For the first release on the new framework, this is perfect for everyone who wants to start with a clean slate to build a unique design... Starting with a more graphically intensive design would be so much more work.

Anyone who isn't interested in supplying their clients with a custom design and is looking for an out-of-the-box solution I'm sure will be pleased with all of the Warp 6 based templates that'll be released in the coming months.

Hmm, i guess that could be the wrong way to approach for an Template Club. As i use Yoothemes now for years i am used to have much work for customizing the templates that it fits my needs.
Thats hard enough if you are not a pro in css and html.
But with this approach now where you can build you have to build your own themes on warp6 - this sounds like that yooteme is just for "pros" now.
Thats too bad as i need a template that can be used almost right out of the box.

Don't be afraid "YOOtheme is for pros now". It is quite the opposite. The Nano theme makes it very easy for beginners to see how everything is working.

If you think it is too plain, no problem, the next theme will have some more shiny stuff again ;-) We have to satisfy all members and a lot of people needed a theme like Nano.

Any updates on the new tool set or did I miss something. I was under the impression that a new set of tools (scroller, accordion, slider, etc.) would be released for both 1.5 and 1.6. Thanks for the comments above. I too was expecting the shiny bells and whistles. I have limited time to create a template from scratch, so a new theme would have been helpful. Keep up the good work.

Sorry if I missed the answer to this already, but will there be new tools for the Warp6 Framework (like an image gallery)? I guess I was thinking new tools would be released with this template since the original ones did not move over to J1.6. If new ones are coming, is there a time frame and can you say what the tools will be. So excited over everything you guys do! Thank you so much!!

Just my quick comments from a fast check...

    1) The template does not render well in IE7, IE8 at all (menus are mess, some layout also)
    2) Do not see any link to see the mobile version
    3) Did not see the promised CSS3 PIE implementation for rounded corners in IE.
    4) Also, did not see the announced error page

And 1 question about Yoo tools: When are they going to be published?

At any case thanks for your efforts. Keep up the good work.

1.) We fixed the IE7 and IE8 issues with Nano. It was just a packaging issue and everything is working fine now.
2.) You can see the mobile version for example using an iPhone
3.) CSS3PIE is of course on board but there was no need to use it in this theme
4.) You can see the an error page for example http://www.yootheme.com/demo/themes/joomla/2011/nano/index.php\?option=com_contentd&\;view=article&\;id=2&\;Itemid=2

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY Warp6!
nano template: simple, but blazing! fast.
I wish Joomla 1.6 Template download would come with some demo content, like Joomla 1.5. I know, you worked all day long to release the new template with warp6 framework, but some guidelines how to add styles for diferent module styles (e.g. copies from warp 5.5 templates) would be a very helpfull homework for the next coming days ...

This is what I was waiting for. Previous templates never really were my cup of thea when it comes to design (I know this boils down to personal taste), but this framework theme gives me the freedom to do just my thing. Thanks so much.
  • The template is nice, but graphically it lacks a lot. After all if we are registered to YOOtheme is why many of us do not have the skills / time to create a theme from zero. In my humble opinion I would have waited a bit and I started a theme that shows 200% full potential of the new framework. It would also update the documentation on the site. I also note some bugs in the mobile version shown on iphone4. Please yooteam given to us a theme that leaves us all with his mouth open, it is also the moment you customize a theme, such as forms and buttons with different styles that they comply with the template. Thank you all guys for your massive work and knowing how to collect our constructive criticism. I hope!

I totally agree. I don't see how this template shows the full capabilities of the framework, unless you build everything from scratch. I really expected to see a very creative and stylistic theme that showcases all of the new features and tools. This theme is really just a blank template for the framework. Of course the template is fast, there is very little content and graphics. I trust the Yoo team, but I expected a bigger bang.

Pure and Nano is ONLY 2 for developers from whole YOO bunch. The WHOLE rest is for end users. And it is great.

You don't start build new house from roof. So Nano is a just foundation. Developers LOVE to have all details simple as possible and well coded to start work with. Don't need to clean out template every time to start build own ideas.

Simple template for start is much better to learn all new mechanisms, functions & logic for all.

How should it look and work on an iPhone with that link?

In vertical mode I see a large "YOOtheme Demo Server" bar with 3 pictograms overlapping the name. They look like buttons but do not work at all. In horizontal mode they do not overlap the name, but still now working?

The only way I can navigate some of the content is via links in the article (only some working - others go to index)...

Does not really work on my iPhone 3GS or am I missing something?

I think the "profile page" view in particular is a great design. Some very basic customization will make this an excellent, clean, hyper-modern design. I personally am glad YOO chose this this design for their first template. It's much more useful to me (and my clients) than so many others containing "cute" graphics and special effects. Frankly I couldn't be more happy with the design and hope to see more of these simpler, cleaner templates.

One small suggestion or additional request would be to have the ability to make the header/footer full width instead of wrapped if needed. Maybe that could be another variation or configurable in the template admin panel. But again.. I love this and thanks!!

This is just my just opinion....

I will say it is a clean template - a little too clean. A lot of users do not know html5 or css3, so they will not know how to change colors, add background images and more. Hopefully the bland colors are easy to change and add a background image to. The typography leaves a lot to be desired. Every other template provider is offering some really good typography with the templates. Yootheme has stayed with the same old ones for how long now? Too long. Now we have this pretty new framework with all these bells and whistles - with the same ole' boring typography of old. Please add some better typography.

And the template does not validate to CSS3, I show 26 errors just on the module variations page. Probably mad it doesn't have better styling options for itself :)

Overall - I would have waited till next month to release the new warp6, that way you could have given the blanks, and some styling. It is hard to swallow this plain theme, and knowing that you not going to at least convert the templates from 2011 over to warp6. I understand that 'It would take a long time. This is a bad business decision to not upgrade some, you are leaving your customers with one new theme, that in reality will take longer for them to use. Why? because they have to style everything, and I mean everything.

I suggest if you aren't going to convert some templates, then you need to come out with some bonus styles this month. To unveil this, and I understand you all worked hard........but it is just plain - plain, and a disappointment. I have been waiting to renew my developers license....and glad I did not just yet.

Hi, we of course we re-worked the typography for Warp6. We like it very much.

The showing CSS3 validation errors bugs of the W3C CSS3 Validator (Text-Shadow and RGBA). Unfortunately vendor-specific prefixes don't validate until the W3C decided that the specification is finalized. But this doesn't mean they are wrong... They are just browser specific...

As I said in the comments above a lot of people needed a theme like Nano...

Testing the new Warp6 Framework now for two custom template builds in Joomla 1.6, so far everything is working well.

We really need the new tools out ASAP, especially for 1.6 , I got one site using a Joomla 1.6 Warp5.5 template and the lack of tools for the Joomla 1.6 is becomming and issue and delaying the project. We had ACL specific reasons for Joomla 1.6 and did not want have to resort to 1.5 3rd party ACL solutions.

I would have liked to have see the tools have more priority and released first before Warp6 personally. Seems many here really need the new tool set and was sad to not see it released yesterday. I kinda got the impression the tools would be rolled out with Warp6.

I like the direction and works I see from yooTheme, but we really need Joomla 1.6 tools set now. I may have to look to alternate solutions for a few sites :-(. This bothers me some... And still no exact date, not betas on the tools despite that it was stated there would be a a possible beta release, etc. Is it days?, Weeks? to release...

Really really like this. Nice job Yoo.

Aesthetically, it rocks. If you want to go with a minimalist look, it's ready and waiting with judicious use of whitespace and pro typography.

I've not installed, but based on the 'framework' idea, I'm sure it's quite customizable.

One of my beefs in the past with many Joomla template providers is throwing everything including the kitchen sink into a design/template and it's almost more difficult pulling the stuff OUT than putting design elements IN. So, I have no gripe whatsoever with the stripped-down thing.

If you look on the WordPress side of things, some of the biggest themes are just that, bare-bones framework; WooThemes=Canvas, Thesis, StudioPress=Genesis.

    Keep up the great work!

FWIW...it really seems like the recent designs (last 5 or 6?) have been taking some cues from WordPress themes. I like it.

Q: Can you please post documentation or a Tutorial on how to use the "image source files" to create our own themes? I've scoured the web everywhere and cannot find a single place where the process is explained. Do we HAVE to use fireworks? Cant do it with Photoshop?

I've tried editing the templates at a more major level before, but ran into difficulty where images end and color numbers begin.

I do managed hosting as a service, and have been looking for a clean, simple Joomla template that didn't get in the way of the eCommerce engine. Unfortunately, most "simple" themes look like they were constructed at the dawn of the web design industry, and modern is not a term I would ascribe to them. Nano, on the other hand, looks just like I wanted: Clean, elegant, professional, modern with the absolute minimum of flare. Mission accomplished, and thanks YooTheme!
