Privacy Placeholders

Show privacy-friendly placeholders for YouTube, Vimeo, Google Maps and OpenStreetMap until users choose to load the external content.

Embedded videos and maps often load resources from external services as soon as a page opens. With privacy placeholders in YOOtheme Pro, content from YouTube, Vimeo, Google Maps and OpenStreetMap are loaded only after users actively click them.

If consent has not been given, YOOtheme Pro automatically shows a placeholder instead. For YouTube and Vimeo videos, YOOtheme Pro fetches the video thumbnail automatically and stores it locally, so the placeholder matches the actual video. Maps show a dedicated map placeholder image, so the layout still looks complete before the external content is loaded.

You can also choose a custom placeholder image and edit the privacy text shown on the placeholder, giving you full control over how the consent message appears in your layout.

Videos and maps only load when users click the placeholder. Until then, no external requests are sent to these services, and no third-party JavaScript is loaded. This helps protect privacy, supports GDPR-friendly embeds and can also improve performance by delaying external content until it is needed.

For videos, this creates a simple two-click solution. Users first give consent for the video service and then click the placeholder to play the video, keeping video embeds privacy-friendly while still making them easy to access directly in your layout.

YouTube, Vimeo, Google Maps and OpenStreetMap are listed as separate services in the Cookie Consent Manager, so users can accept or decline each one individually.
