Bidirectional Relationship

Save time with bidirectional relationships between content types. Simply connect them once, and load related content dynamically from both sides.

Let's say you have two content types — events and organizers. You'd want to show the organizer on the event page, and its upcoming events on the organizer page. By default, the relationship is unidirectional. So each content type has its own related field, and you need to pick the related items on both sides. With a bidirectional relationship, you only need to pick it on one side, and it will be related in the other direction as well.

In Joomla, we use the free Articles Field from Regular Labs to create a unidirectional relationship between content types. So related content is only selected on one side. This is where YOOtheme Pro comes in. When loading dynamic content, it fills the gap by automatically providing the corresponding related fields for the other side with all referencing items. So you get bidirectional relationship out of the box.

In WordPress, we use the Advanced Custom Fields plugin which offers a bidirectional relationship between post object fields. Simply enable the "Bidirectional" option on both sides and select the corresponding target fields. Now, when a related post is picked in one field, it's also saved in the other. In the layout, you can dynamically load each related custom field just as usual.

It's a real time-saver — especially when working with multiple related content types.
