Widgetkit 2.2 released

Refined User Interface and Demo Packages

Widgetkit 2.2 released

We are really proud of the speedy and healthy update cycle of Widgetkit 2. Version 2.0 had been developed from the ground up, allowing for a clean separation between Widget content and Widget representation. The 2.1 release added more Widgets, including the much desired Gallery. With the latest 2.2 release, we are improving the user interface, taking into consideration the feedback you've been giving us these past few weeks. We've also created a complete demo package for you to understand what's possible - including documentation of all Widget parameters.

User Experience revisited

Up until now, content and Widget type have been managed separately in the Widgetkit user interface. We've decided to bring those tasks back together, while keeping the clean separation in the back end. This allows for easier Widget management and will also feel familiar to previous users of Widgetkit 1.

Widgetkit 2.2 User Interface

A Widget instance now couples the Widget's content and representation. You can still edit your Widgets both in the standalone Widgetkit settings and right from your content. Plus, we've added a new Copy button so you can reuse your Widgets in several places and modify them individually.

The parameters of your Widget's appearance are no longer included in the shortcode, but are managed exclusively from the visual editor. The short code is now reduced to just being a code with the id of your Widget and an optional name attribute that makes it easier to recognize a Widget in your code.

A short code in Widgetkit 2.0 or 2.1 looked like this:

[widgetkit id="23" widget="grid" media_border="circle" animation_media="fade" animation_content="slide" ...]

In Widgetkit 2.2+, it turns into this:

[widgetkit id="23" name="Features Grid"]

Smooth Upgrade for Joomla and Wordpress

The upgrade to version 2.2 requires changing all of your short codes. Fortunately, we've managed to work out an automatic update procedure to make this conversion as easy as possible for you. On update, all short codes will be analyzed. Their attributes will be extracted and set on the actual Widget instance. If you use one content item in several places and have different parameter settings, new copies of the Widget with the actual settings will be generated automatically. And yes, this will work for both Joomla and Wordpress Users.

Important: Always run a local test run on your content before applying the update on your live site. While this has been tested by us, our tests can never include all possible setups with customizations or third party extensions.

Demo Content

The recent themes already highlight some of the Widgetkit 2 possibilities. We've now finished complete demo content for all Widgets. Available online, you'll now find examples showcasing a lot of possible Widget setups. Plus, we've added detailed lists, explaining every Widget parameter. We think this is a great addition to the existing documentation.

Feedback

This release marks a big step in improving Widgetkit's user interface. For the next release, we'll focus on adding even more Widgets and content providers. As always, we're keen to hear your feedback and comments on this new release.

Really cool stuff, extremly well done!

One little thing would be amazing:
Instead of choosing images the abiltiy to use Icons (e.g. Font Awesome) with all its possibilities of dynamic formats/effects would be great.
or is there already a way to do this?

You can use the icons with the icon classes from UIkit. So just add the according html snippet in your content fields: http://getuikit.com/docs/icon.html

However, it is not possible to select an icon just like you'd select an image.

Yes, Florian, I know this way with the content field. ;-)
But this option is not as easy as using the image field option.

I think about a tab or radio button option for choosing image or icon.
And below this tab there is an additional class field for icon css.

Maybe you will insert it as a feature in any future version of widgetkit.
Thanx in advance for realizing this feature ;-)

    Hi, good job!
Is there a reason why you don't generate thumbnails anymore? All images in the galleries are fullsize and just scaled down in the browser.
On mobile devices loading all images could take a long time.
    Kind regards.

Widgetkit 2.x is really nice and amazing, but to me having lost the possibility to notate parameters inside shortcode is a step back. Now I don't see how to reuse the same content in different ways for separated pages and making copies of the widget is not an option as makes maintenance unpractical.

This step back to slim shortcodes might be good for very static web project with not too much updates but lacks the "dynamism" the long description parameter offered.

Please consider making the system both ways compatible.

    –––––
Also, after last update I had several duplicated widgetkits that brought chaos to my admin side. I understand this was a malfunction as part of the update process.
    ––––––

Sorry for complaining so much, I had to rework huge part of my project because of the update and also is not good that there is no constructive criticism for a payed product.

    Kind regards,
    Pere

Thanks for your feedback. Just one thing to clarify for the update process:

As you can read in the blog post, new copies of the widgets are generated automatically, if needed. This happens if you have used content multiple times because now content and widgets are coupled again. You don't have to rework anything after the update.

Ok, then if my widget was invoked in two different articles you mean it gets copied a second time to get redistributed between articles. I understand. Excuse me for no having realized this was warned int he blog.

This is then part of the 'step back' problem I complain, since this copy is made I have to update two widgets instead of one if I want it to show slightly different in an article than in a module, for example.

Here is where we loss the HUGE flexibility was brought with Widgetkit 2. Looks like "we are going conservative" so grandmas and overweighted government officials are capable of assuming the migration from widgetkit 1.

And sorry, don't want to be cynical, just graphical about my concerns because that lost flexibility opened a huge number of possibilities and let me stop using other third party "widgets" for certain cases where dynamism and 'on demand' content display was required.

OF COURSE apart of this serious problem the rest of things about Widgetkit 2 are incredible better that WK1. And was good that WK ID was reintroduced in the list of widgets (as it was lost since 2.0). In this case was a STEP FURTHER for daily web developers.

Oh no, I liked to manage content in a place, and widget in an other. It was really practical to display 1 content in several places with differents widgets. And for clients who juste want to manage the content the simpliest way possible.

The demo page is very slow. I'm used to fast pages on yootheme. Just wanted to mention this. Also. Sometimes the demos are lagging. Especially the grid stack. I'm using a mac mini with i5 8gb ram and ssd.
The assets load faster for me though. Migrating to widgetkit 2 made my site load faster (pagespeed / pingdom)

I'm currently testing WK 2.2.1 on a clean J!3.4.1 installation with YT Master 2 (7.3) and Zoo 3.3.4; I like it, with a few reservations (so far).

Currently having an issue with the gallery option, whereby the images don't always all load on the page. I've tried clearing/purging cache, but that doesn't make a difference... none of the images are over 60kb and there are only about 12 selected. I'll take that up with Support...

In a future version, I'd like to have the option of selecting an entire image folder when creating a widget, as well as front-end image uploading to predefined folders.

The shortcode format has changed to reflect only the widget ID and name. The codes are indeed shorter (so lives up to its name), but we are no longer afforded the flexibility of copying shortcodes to other parts of the wesite and changing the parameters of the copies to the required settings. So, while the ability to copy widgets is a welcome addition, it seems to come at a price. I know... everything does... apparently.

Speaking of price, I must express my profound disappointment at the loss of the WidgetKit Twitter module, particluarly as it was one of my deciding factors for purchasing WidgetKit. What's more disturbing, unless I missed it, is that there was no mention anywhere that the facility was to be axed. Of course, you have every right to improve/change your products. Your customers, however, have every right to know about these improvements... BEFORE they happen (back to my request for change logs on release, not after installation).

I'm still testing, so can't draw a conclusion yet. But I can't help but starting to feel a little bit cheated.

I'd also like to have (back) the ability to add a class to the WidgetKit module, not (just) the actual widget.

As it currently is, I'm not able to make use of the style rule(s) created for other modules on the WidgetKit module, resulting in the need to put the WidgetKit shortcode in a custom HTML module.

"... the need to put the WidgetKit shortcode in a custom HTML module".
I forgot to point out that inserting a WK short code (using the Widgitkit button) in a custom HTML module doesn't work. Only the shortcode shows up.
Yet when I create a WK module (using the same Widgetkit) and insert that WK module in a custom HTML module (using Modules Anywhere - No Number), it works perfectly... AND I'm able to style the module!

I hope you can appreciate my issue, here; that;s a lot of steps for what should be an elementary job. Fundamentally, I'm having to create two modules to display (and style) one of them.

          "Only the shortcode shows up"

Ok... I have since found out that I have to set the Prepare Content option in the custom HTML module settings to "yes". Ok, that's easy enough.

Interesting, though, how I didn't need to do that with Modules Anywhere, which performs pretty much the same function as the Widgetkit button (inserts content in short code format)... it just worked. I'd like to see that magic in Widgetkit.

As a migrator from WK1 to WK2 I found WK2 virtually impossible to use. Even the help didn't....help! It was a learning curve too steep.

I stopped using it and used third party options instead.

Now that we may have a nod and a wink back to WK1, I may start using WK again.

I love where Widgetkit is going; really smooth!

I have two questions about the Tag filtering, though:

    1. Why is the Tag filtering only avaialble for the dynamic Grid and Gallery layouts and not for the fixed height ones?

    2. Would it be possible to add a tag pre-filtering in the WK2 module; I intend to limit the number of results in the sense of one Category AND one Tag. This would make WK2 absolutley perfect for my needs! It would be good if the filtering honored language selection as well..

    Thanks for considering!
